What's a heuristic evaluation?

Have you ever heard someone say, after looking at your designs while you're working on them, or while showing your prototype to someone, or even while viewing a test version of your website/app/etc., "Ah! There is something 🤔 odd in these designs, but I'm not sure."

You will face questions such as

– The copy is not working here
– Maybe the spacing are not right
– Hey! I'm stuck on this page. How will I get from here?
– Why are we making the users panic by showing the message in red? It's just a warning.
– Why do you mean "Network Chain Not Found" 🙄
– Why does our web interface look so different from the app?
– ...

So you get the concept here. Heuristics are rules specifically designed for internal teams (design, product, marketing, tech, growth, etc.) who can evaluate the whole flow before you ship the product out to the market for your end users.

Heuristics, also called the design inspection report, cannot be tested with the actual users. It's for your internal team. 🚫 Never relate this to usability testing.

You'll find so many similar templates on the Internet, but only a few explain why you need them and where to apply them. I prepared this template while working on several UX projects and thought of sharing it with the community so that you don't reinvent the wheel.

The heuristic evaluation process is conducted against a predetermined set of usability principles known as heuristics. Jakob Nielsen's 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design are the basis for my template.

Things you will find in the heuristic evaluation template

– You'll get the link to the heuristic notion template
– You're free to remix and make changes after duplicating the file icon (at the top right)
– The template has the basic structure of adding an issue, assigning a particular heuristic, selecting the platform, adding the evaluator (could be one of your product team or design), adding screenshots/links to the reference image where you find the issue
